SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly General Meeting! \nKeynote Speaker: Congressman Mike Levin (CD-49)\nCongressman Mike Levin represents California’s 49th Congressional District\, which includes North County San Diego and South Orange County. \nThroughout his career\, Levin has been a passionate leader on environmental protection\, clean energy\, and combating climate change. After graduating from Stanford University and Duke University School of Law\, Levin worked as an attorney focused on energy and environmental issues.  In addition to his legal work\, Levin served on the board of the Center for Sustainable Energy\, and co-founded Sustain OC\, helping accelerate the transition toward more sustainable power generation and transportation alternatives. \nAs a member of Congress\, some of Levin’s top priorities are combating climate change\, capitalizing on the economic benefits of a sustainable energy future\, and providing solutions to move hazardous nuclear waste at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. He also was one of the first freshman members of Congress to endorse the Green New Deal. \nAs the grandson of a World War II veteran and the representative of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton\, Levin will advocate for the active duty service members and veterans who have sacrificed for our freedom. He has spoken out about the importance of protecting the V.A. from privatization efforts\, improving veterans health care and services\, and expanding job opportunities for those who have served. \nLevin has also championed efforts to expand access to affordable health care\, lower the cost of higher education\, preserve Social Security and Medicare\, prevent gun violence\, enact comprehensive immigration reform\, and protect a woman’s right to choose. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus\, the #FutureForum\, and\, as the grandson of immigrants from Mexico\, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. \nLevin lives in San Juan Capistrano with his wife\, Chrissy\, and their two children\, ages 7 and 5. \n\n  \nWe are collecting donations for Working Wardrobes at our January meeting.  Please bring your gently used work or casual clothing.  You can leave clothes on hangers and they take accessories too! To find out more about Working Wardrobes and the amazing work they do right here in our community\, visit their website. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n ORANGE IS THE NEW PURPLE\nJon Gould\n\nStarting as a bright red jurisdiction several decades ago\, Orange County has transitioned to become one of only three truly “purple” counties among the nation’s 25 most populous areas. Further\, with four competitive congressional districts within its borders\, Orange County may help shape control of  the U.S. House. \nUC Irvine has recently launched its UCI OC Poll\, surveying county residents on their political preferences\, attitudes\, and concerns. The latest results help explain what is driving various races and how things look just a few months out from November. \nThe director of the poll\, Jon Gould\, Dean of UCI’s School of Social Ecology\, will join us to discuss the poll’s findings and offer his own analysis and predictions. For anyone who wonders or worries about November’s coming elections\, the event should be illuminating. \n\n      \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Jon Gould\nDean of the School of Social Ecology\, University of California\, Irvine \nJon Gould is a distinguished scholar in policy and government reform who has held key positions in the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Science Foundation.  \nGould leads the nation’s first school of social ecology\, established in 1970 in response to high demand for more socially relevant research. For more than 50 years\, the school has been an internationally recognized pioneer in developing interdisciplinary approaches to social problems. \nGould’s expertise covers a variety of subjects. He is the author of five books and more than 100 articles and reports on such diverse subjects as political advertising\, human rights\, hate speech\, sexual harassment and indigent defense. \nGould has filled a range of government leadership roles\, including senior policy adviser in the U.S. Department of Justice and director of the Law & Social Sciences Program at the National Science Foundation. In 2015\, U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts appointed him as reporter for a committee of the federal courts evaluating the operation of the Criminal Justice Act. They help almost 2\,000 youth annually prepare for independent adulthood. \nThey are in need of: \ncanned goods (soups\, beans\, chili\, vegetables\, tuna\, chicken) \npasta\, rice\, cereal\, mac-n-cheese\, instant oatmeal \npeanut or almond butter\, jelly\, jam \nnut or trail mixes\, protein bars\, jerky \n  \n Please bring donations to our meeting. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL General Meeting: Climate Change in our Community
DESCRIPTION:ORANGE IS THE NEW PURPLE\nJon Gould\n\nStarting as a bright red jurisdiction several decades ago\, Orange County has transitioned to become one of only three truly “purple” counties among the nation’s 25 most populous areas.
