SUMMARY:Learn about Community Choice Energy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nJoin our Political Action Committee chair\, Andrea Alexander\, and learn all about Community Choice Energy at this free\, virtual Zoom event. This hot-topic issue has been discussed by most of our local city councils.  This easy and informative discussion will cover all of your questions about Community Choice Energy and why so many other local areas are adopting it. Get informed on this critical\, local issue! \n  \nBackground:\nCommunity Choice Energy (aka Community Choice Aggregation (CCA)) brings competition and consumer choice to the electricity sector with a focus on local\, renewable energy. As not-for-profit agencies\, CCEs are not beholden to multi-million dollar CEO salaries or shareholder returns\, but rather to stable\, competitive pricing for consumers and increasingly\nresilient\, clean\, and local energy systems. \nThe OC Power Authority (OCPA) is OC’s first CCE program. Formed in December 2020\, OCPA will begin serving member cities Irvine\, Fullerton\, Huntington Beach\, and Buena Park in 2022. Other cities can join the OCPA after their city councils vote to do so and may begin service as early as 2023. \nThe Lake Forest City Council voted in December 2020 to join OCPA\, but then voted to leave the program in February 2021. \n  \nTopics that will be covered:\n\nConsumer Choice\nSavings & Economic Impact\nClean Energy\nLocal Investment & Jobs\nProtection from Wildfire\nLocal Control\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n How is Climate Change Affecting Our Community? How fast is it happening? What can WE do to fight it?\n \nClimate change is the greatest threat to our existence. Schneiderman Endowed Chair and Professor of Biology at University of California Irvine. For thirty years\, she has led an internationally recognized research program and educated the next generation of scientists and students who are fighting for our climate. In acknowledgement of her outstanding research and publication record on global climate change\, she has been elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America\, the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \nIn 2017\, Kathleen began to work within our local area to enact real-world solutions to climate change. She co-founded OC Clean Power\, a grassroots organization of over 30 non-profits\, businesses\, school organizations\, and faith groups. With her leadership\, they successfully lobbied Irvine\, Fullerton\, Huntington Beach\, and Buena Park to found OC Power Authority\, one of the largest renewable energy programs in California. \nKathleen is running for a seat on the Irvine City Council. She and her husband\, Jim\, are proud parents to twins who love the outdoors\, science\, and art. They remind her of what’s at stake for a better future. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Ayn Craciun is the Orange County Policy Manager with Climate Action Campaign\, a leading nonprofit climate policy watchdog in the region. Ayn’s work focuses on advancing equity\, facilitating adoption of zero carbon Climate Action & Adaptation Plans\, Building Electrification policies\, and Community Choice Energy — any city’s fastest path to 100% clean energy. Before embarking on her path as an environmental advocate\, Ayn had a successful career in corporate communications and PR. In 2016\, Ayn helped advocate for the City of Irvine’s historic organic landscaping policy. In 2018\, Ayn turned her focus to the climate crisis and helped build a coalition of support to create the Irvine-led Orange County Power Authority\, which launched in December 2020. In Feb. 2021\, she joined Climate Action Campaign\, helping draft and build support for the City of Irvine’s ACHIEVES climate resolution\, which made Irvine the first city in Southern California and the third in the state to commit to 2030 zero carbon goals in line with the most recent climate science.
