SUMMARY:Census 2020 Virtual Meeting with Sara Pol-Lim
DESCRIPTION:CENSUS 2020:  Time to get your questions answered!!\nThe 2020 Census determines how billions of federal dollars are distributed in California. An undercount could impact funding for our schools\, health services\, childcare\, emergency services and many other programs. \nThe Census also determines the number of California’s Congressional members and Electoral College votes. A complete count means more people in power who truly represent and advocate for our communities. \n  \nLink no longer available. \n(Meeting maximum: 300 people) \n  \nPeople want to know: \nWhat is California doing to work towards a complete and accurate count in the 2020 Census? \nWhat is the California Census Office doing to encourage participation? \nHow is private information protected? \nWho must respond to the Census? \nWhat questions do you have?  Join us on April 16 to get the answers! \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nSara Pol-Lim is a Regional Program Manager for the California Complete Count – Census 2020. She joined the state Census Office in October 2018. Sara brought knowledge of historically undercounted populations\, such as immigrant and refugee communities\, to the State’s Census outreach campaign. A refugee herself\, she understands the fear some California residents have of government. Sara was executive director of the United Cambodian Community (UCC) of Long Beach from 2007 to 2015. She broke the cultural barrier to be the first Cambodian Woman to lead the UCC back to sustainability. In 2018\, Sara completed a doctoral degree in educational leadership at California State University\, Long Beach. Through her community work\, Sara has received awards from numerous organizations\, including the NAACP-Long Beach\, the state Assembly and the Los Angeles County Supervisorial District. \n  \n[themify_button style=”xlarge green” link=”https://zoom.us/j/766434041?pwd=NEdQT3J2cUtTWFYvZmVCOEduenV0Zz09″ target=”<strong>_blank</strong>”]JOIN THE ZOOM MEETING[/themify_button] \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Curious what districts you live in? It “authorizes Bonds for Facility Repair\, Construction\, and Modernization at Public Preschools\, K-12 Schools\, Community Colleges\, and Universities. Legislative Statute.” And raises the ceilings for school and community college districts’ bonds. Authorizes $15 billion in state general obligation bonds to improve public education facilities\, including earthquake/fire safety and removal of lead from water. Limits administrative costs to 5 percent. \nMeasure A – NO\n“An Ordinance … Amending the [Orange] County Charter to Require a 2/3 Vote of the Board of Supervisors to Propose Taxes …” Currently a simple majority is required to present for election the imposition\, extension\, or increase of a tax. This measure raises the requirement to a vote by four of the five Supervisors\, making it extremely difficult to raise revenues. It is an attempt by current Republican supervisors to tie the hands of Democrats if they should win the majority of seats on the Board of Supervisors. \nCapistrano Unified School District\nSchool Facilities Improvement Bond – YES on Measure I\n“Capistrano Unified School District School Facilities Improvement Bond Measure.” Generates $300 million in bond funds. Tax on property not to exceed $34 per $100\,000 assessed value. Bond funds may be used only to build or improve school facilities; cannot be used for salaries or other operating expenses; requires annual performance and financial audits; establishes an independent citizen’s oversight committee. \nSaddleback Valley Unified School District\nLocal School Facilities Improvement Bond – YES on Measure M\n“Saddleback Valley Unified School District School Facilities Safe and Modern Classroom Bond Measure.” It is similar to Measure I above\, except for a different amount: $495 million. \n\n  \nLIVE IN ORANGE COUNTY\, BUT NOT IN OUR AREA?\nCheck out the Democratic Party of Orange County’s Endorsement Guide to find out all of our endorsed candidates across Orange County!\n \n  \n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Curious what districts you live in? SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly General Meeting! \nKeynote Speaker: Congressman Mike Levin (CD-49)\nCongressman Mike Levin represents California’s 49th Congressional District\, which includes North County San Diego and South Orange County. \nThroughout his career\, Levin has been a passionate leader on environmental protection\, clean energy\, and combating climate change. After graduating from Stanford University and Duke University School of Law\, Levin worked as an attorney focused on energy and environmental issues.  In addition to his legal work\, Levin served on the board of the Center for Sustainable Energy\, and co-founded Sustain OC\, helping accelerate the transition toward more sustainable power generation and transportation alternatives. \nAs a member of Congress\, some of Levin’s top priorities are combating climate change\, capitalizing on the economic benefits of a sustainable energy future\, and providing solutions to move hazardous nuclear waste at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. He also was one of the first freshman members of Congress to endorse the Green New Deal. \nAs the grandson of a World War II veteran and the representative of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton\, Levin will advocate for the active duty service members and veterans who have sacrificed for our freedom. He has spoken out about the importance of protecting the V.A. from privatization efforts\, improving veterans health care and services\, and expanding job opportunities for those who have served. \nLevin has also championed efforts to expand access to affordable health care\, lower the cost of higher education\, preserve Social Security and Medicare\, prevent gun violence\, enact comprehensive immigration reform\, and protect a woman’s right to choose. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus\, the #FutureForum\, and\, as the grandson of immigrants from Mexico\, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. \nLevin lives in San Juan Capistrano with his wife\, Chrissy\, and their two children\, ages 7 and 5. \n\n  \nWe are collecting donations for Working Wardrobes at our January meeting.  Please bring your gently used work or casual clothing.  You can leave clothes on hangers and they take accessories too! Governor\, Eleni Kounalakis\, as the keynote speaker at our biggest fundraiser of the year! \nKounalakis  was sworn in by Governor Gavin Newsom on January 7th\, 2019. She is the first woman elected Lt. Governor of California. A native Californian\, she visited each of the state’s 58 counties during her historic campaign. \nFrom 2010 to 2013\, Kounalakis served as President Barack Obama’s Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary. Kounalakis was the first Greek-American woman – and at age 43 one of America’s youngest – to serve as U.S. Ambassador. Governor Jerry Brown appointed Kounalakis to chair the California Advisory Council for International Trade and Investment in 2014. \nPrior to her public service\, Kounalakis was president of one of California’s most respected housing development firms\, AKT Development\, where she worked for 18 years. Passionate about early childhood development\, Kounalakis served as a member of California’s First 5 Commission and the California Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism. \nCome celebrate a year of hard-work turning south Orange County blue at this festive event.
