SUMMARY:Gun Control Rally at Mimi Walters' Office
DESCRIPTION:ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!\nWe need to show Mimi Walters that her constituents are disgusted by her continuing acceptance of gun lobbyist money at the expense of our children’s safety.  According to Washington Post\, 150\,000 students attending at least 170 primary or secondary schools have experienced a shooting on their campus since Columbine.  Without legislative change\, this problem will not go away!  Instead of standing up for kids and families that are dealing with this\, Mimi is actively co-sponsoring legislation that will make it easier to undermine the stricter gun laws we’ve passed as Californians. \nShow up and help us send a clear message–her position is wrong and it has terrible consequences. \n  \nWHEN: FRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 16TH\, 4:30PM – 6:30PM\nWHERE: IN FRONT OF MIMI WALTERS’ OFFICE\, 3333 Michelson Drive\, Irvine\, CA 92612\n\nBring signs with the names of shooting victims & against gun violence.\nWe will have post-it notes so people can leave their notes on Mimi’s office door.\nWe will also have Valentine’s hearts that you can write a name on for Mimi.\nWe will have a list of victims names from various mass shootings that will be read out loud at the rally.

SUMMARY:Mission Viejo Public Hearing: District-Based Elections
DESCRIPTION:The City Council of Mission Viejo will be holding a public hearing at 6:00 PM in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center to discuss the City’s interest in and the process for transitioning from at-large to district-based council member elections.  If you live in Mission Viejo and want to make your voice heard on this subject\, be sure to show up early!  This is the fourth of five public hearings that will be held on this topic and the City Council will vote on the matter at the last one.  To find out more about the hearing\, visit the City of Mission Viejo’s website here. \nIf you’re not sure what the difference is between district-based and at-large elections\, you can view the city’s description and the reason why they’ve undertaken the hearings for a potential transition here.  Generally\, “at-large” elections mean that every voter in Mission Viejo votes for every seat on the City Council.  District-based elections split the city into smaller districts and voters of each district elect a council member from their own district.  District-based elections are often favorable for smaller neighborhoods or diverse cities to have minority viewpoints find representation on a council rather than getting shut out completely. \nIf you have questions about what this change could mean or how to participate your local City Council meetings\, let us know by emailing us info@canyondems.org.

SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a double dose of candidates at our October monthly meeting!\n[themify_col grid=”2-1 first”] \nMeet Brian Forde\, Candidate for CD-45!\nBrian was born and raised in Tustin. He built his first computer\, took his first college course\, and started his first company in District 45. Brian has spent his life using technology to help others\, from the Peace Corps to the White House. \n“I’m a Democrat and I worked in the Obama White House\, so it might surprise you to learn that my parents are two lifelong Republicans. In 2012\, my parents – two of the most loving\, supportive people you’ll ever meet – voted to kick my boss out of office. \nLet’s just say Thanksgiving dinner that year was awkward.” \nRead more at Brian’s website. \n[/themify_col] [themify_col grid=”2-1″] \n \nMeet Dr. Hans Keirstead\, Candidate for CD-48\n“I’m running for Congress because through my work in medicine and business I have learned that innovative thinking is needed to inspire change. I revolutionized the treatment of spinal cord injuries by re-thinking how cells are developed and used as treatment\, which allowed people to regain movement and sensation to limbs that were previously paralyzed. This same lateral approach can be used in Washington to fix our systemic problem of gridlock with innovative outside-the-box techniques.” \nRead more at Hans’ website.\n[/themify_col] \n
