SUMMARY:Mission Viejo Public Hearing: District-Based Elections
DESCRIPTION:The City Council of Mission Viejo will be holding a public hearing at 6:00 PM in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center to discuss the City’s interest in and the process for transitioning from at-large to district-based council member elections.  If you live in Mission Viejo and want to make your voice heard on this subject\, be sure to show up early!  This is the third of five public hearings that will be held on this topic and the City Council will vote on the matter at the last one.  To find out more about the hearing\, visit the City of Mission Viejo’s website here. \nIf you’re not sure what the difference is between district-based and at-large elections\, you can view the city’s description and the reason why they’ve undertaken the hearings for a potential transition here.  Generally\, “at-large” elections mean that every voter in Mission Viejo votes for every seat on the City Council.  District-based elections split the city into smaller districts and voters of each district elect a council member from their own district.  District-based elections are often favorable for smaller neighborhoods or diverse cities to have minority viewpoints find representation on a council rather than getting shut out completely. \nIf you have questions about what this change could mean or how to participate your local City Council meetings\, let us know by emailing us info@canyondems.org. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n Courageous Citizenship\nJeremy Cohen\, PhD \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Dr. Mike Moodian & Dr. Fred Smoller\nDr. Mike Moodian has served as a faculty member at Chapman University since 2007 and teached for the leadership studies program.  \nDr. Fred Smoller is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Chapman University where he has been a member of the faculty since 1983. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Michael Sall\nMichael is the DPOC Director of Democratic Clubs and an attorney at Sall Spencer Callas & Krueger in Laguna Beach\, California\, with a practice in legal ethics and business litigation. SUMMARY:45th Congressional District Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:In lieu of our normal monthly meeting\, we’ll be holding a candidate forum for the 45th Congressional District.  \nThere are still a bunch of people in the race\, but we’ve invited the four most viable candidates thus far\, Brian Forde\, Kia Hamadanchy\, Dave Min\, and Katie Porter.  Only Canyon Dems Members will be able to participate in a straw poll at the end\, ranking the performance of the candidates at the forum. \nDue to an overwhelming response\, we’ve sold out of tickets.  Members can still get in for free\, but we’ve closed purchasing new memberships until Wednesday (after the forum).  We want to thank everyone for the incredible enthusiasm we’ve received for this event.  We truly believe the Blue Wave is ready to sweep South Orange County like never before.  If you missed out for this event and want to be in the know for all of our upcoming events\, please sign up for our mailing list on our home page!\nFor our members and ticketed guests\, please arrive early to the forum!  We have a sold out crowd and we will start promptly at 7:00 PM.  No signs or items that make noise will be allowed inside the forum.  No recording will be permitted.\n  \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n Courageous Citizenship\nJeremy Cohen\, PhD \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Dr.
