General Meeting with Special Guest Professor Jane Stoever
March 19, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Domestic Violence Dynamics and the Politicization of Safety
Safety in one’s home, relationships, and person can be viewed as a basic human rights issue, yet nationally and globally, one in three teenage girls and one in four women experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. Professor Jane Stoever will discuss the dynamics of domestic violence and her new book, The Politicization of Safety, which calls for greater consideration of the interplay of politics, domestic violence, and how the law works in people’s lives.
About the presenter: Jane Stoever is a professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, where she directs the Domestic Violence Clinic and the Initiative to End Family Violence and teaches Family Law and Legal Ethics. She also co-chairs the Orange County Domestic Violence Death Review Team. Her research concerns domestic violence law, family law, firearms and family violence, and feminist legal theory, and her scholarship includes the new book The Politicization of Safety (Stoever ed., NYU Press 2019). She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School and her LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center.
