Orange County has a robust network of organizations dedicated to helping people from diverse backgrounds meet their basic needs and create positive change in their lives. Our November program highlights the work of two such fine organizations, the Orange County Food Bank and Working Wardrobes.
The O.C. Food Bank distributed nearly 23 million pounds of food last year, serving an average 200,000 people each month, with the help of 18,000 volunteers and thousands of food and financial donors. The Food Bank works with nearly 400 local charities, including churches, senior centers, shelters, community centers and social services agencies. Those charities feed seniors on fixed incomes, individuals with disabilities, the unemployed, the homeless and the working poor. The Food Bank directly feeds 1,400 people each day in local communities.
About the presenter: Mark Lowry is the Director of the O.C. Food Bank. During his tenure, the quantity of food distributed by the Food Bank has grown from two million pounds to almost twenty-three million pounds per year. Mark works closely with elected officials at the local, state and federal levels on issues related to social and economic justice. He also focuses on agriculture and tax policy and improving access to federal nutrition programs.
Working Wardrobes has been getting individuals back to work for 26 years. It provides career assessments, skills training, career development services, job placement assistance and professional wardrobes to get individuals workforce ready. Working Wardrobes serves nearly 5,000 clients each year from diverse backgrounds, including welfare-to-work, alcohol and substance abuse, domestic violence, transitional homelessness, catastrophic illness and traumatic financial losses.
About the presenter: Ashley Baribeault-Vlcan is the Director of Client Services for Working Wardrobes. She oversees the Working Wardrobes Career Success Institute, including the job search lab and career development services/client programs. Ashley assists with curriculum development, fund development, grant identification and submission. She also oversees the in-reach services for formerly incarcerated individuals transitioning out of the Orange County Jail system. Ashley will be joined by Kathi Shaner, Working Wardrobes Community Outreach & Volunteer Engagement Manager.
