Trudy, a 50+ year resident of Laguna Beach, has been active in her community for many of those years. Prior to her retirement, Trudy was a motivational humorist educating & speaking to groups around the country about cancer.

APRIL COMMUNITY OUTREACH

This month we are supporting WISEPlace, the only Orange County-based nonprofit leading the effort to end homelessness for unaccompanied women. They provide women with safe shelter, counseling and mental health services, case management and addiction recovery, and employment assistance to help rebuild their lives.

They are in need of :

laundry baskets, set of plastic hangers, twin bed linens, towel sets, pillows, twin blankets, full-size toiletries, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes/toothpaste, thick 9×12 paper for acrylic painting, art sketching pencils, paper plates.

Please bring donations to our meeting. We will have someone in front of The Murray Center to collect your donations.

Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens. Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence in America. We will learn tonight about their past accomplishments and what efforts are currently underway locally and at the state level to stem the tide of gun violence. You’ll leave with specific actions you can take to advocate for change.

Patricia has been an active volunteer with Moms Demand Action since 2018, having decided to get off the sidelines after 17 people were shot and killed at a high school in Parkland, Florida. She is the former Orange County lead with Moms Demand Action and is now part of the California state leadership team. A former marketing executive and now a stay at home mom, she lives in Santa Ana with her husband and two children ages 10 and 8.

Joe Kerr will also be speaking to our club to discuss his strategy to defeat Young Kim for the CA-40 US Congressional seat in November.

We are collecting gently used clothing, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, detergent, fabric softener and similar household items for Laura’s House. For the past 29 years, Laura’s House has provided shelter and supportive services to more than 5,000 survivors of domestic violence in Orange County.

Mr. Gordon’s presentation will focus on legislative advocacy in the context of the state’s current fiscal and political backdrop. This year will be filled with all kinds of political dimensions that will impact the agenda for education and children. Kevin’s nearly 30-year career as a legislative advocate will bring to the audience his perceptions and predictions for the coming year.

Kevin Gordon

Widely viewed among the top education advocates in California, Kevin is the President and a founding Partner of Capitol Advisors Group. Kevin was the longtime Executive Director of the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO), and previously served as the Chief Lobbyist and Assistant Executive Director of the California School Boards Association (CSBA). He also served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Robert T. Matsui and as a legislative advocate for the California Building Industry Association (CBIA). He holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Prior to that, while completing his undergraduate degree in communication studies at University of California, Davis, he was recruited by the IBM Corporation and served three years in its national marketing division for large systems. 

FEBRUARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH

We are having a Toiletry Drive for Saddleback Valley Unified School District’s Student Marketplace. The Student Marketplace was established to provide food and personal supplies to McKinney Vento families in the Saddleback Valley School District. These are families who may be homeless or are struggling financially to keep a roof over their heads.  Families are vetted as to their economic status and must register to receive goods each Friday afternoon while school is in session.  Fresh milk, eggs , vegetables, and a protein are given to each family as well as canned goods and personal hygiene products. 

Top Needed Items are: deodorant, sanitary pads, shampoo & disposable razors

The Democratic Party of California did not make an endorsement recommendation for Congressional District 40, which is the district that most of our members reside in.  We are delighted that both Democratic candidates, Allyson Muniz Damikolas and Joe Kerr, will be coming to speak to our members. Following their presentations of why they are the best choice to defeat Rep. Young Kim in November, we will allow all members to vote to support one of these candidates via secret ballot.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE: BAD FOR PATIENTS, GREAT FOR PROFITEERS

Our precious Medicare program has attracted Wall Street, and they’re pillaging our public dollars as they delay and deny our access to healthcare. We’ll talk about why Medicare is so important to us all, who’s attacking it, and some decisions you might not realize you’re making!

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage or MA, is a privately administered program in which the federal government gives a regular lump sum of money to a third party (generally a commercial insurer) to “manage” patient care. This is radically different from the way Traditional Medicare (TM) pays providers and gives the insurers running MA an irresistible financial incentive to delay, deny, and otherwise skimp on care. MA is growing, to the detriment of patients everywhere. Although the program has existed since 2003, it has expanded enrollment significantly in the past decade. This year, Medicare reached an alarming milestone, as data confirmed that more than 50% of all Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in an MA plan.

Ed Weisbart MD is a nationally recognized physician/activist working to save Medicare. He currently serves as the board secretary and MO chapter chair of Physicians for a National Health Program, a non-profit non-partisan organization of more than 25,000 physicians and other healthcare advocates in support of a publicly financed, non-profit single-payer national health insurance program that would fully cover medical care for all Americans.


After practicing family medicine for 20 years at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, he moved to St. Louis in 2003 to serve as chief medical officer of Express Scripts until retiring in 2010.

In our first section, we will be focusing on the various attacks on public education to let everyone know this is a national effort that is reaching into local districts. From the national well-funded effort to eliminate public education (standardized testing, vouchers, “failing” schools, etc.) to the state and county level, to our local districts (including SVUSD and CapoUSD).
 
In the second section, we will be pointing out ways in which the extreme rightwing (white supremacists, evangelical churches, etc), despite their claims that they are advocating for “parents’ rights,” are in fact abusing students’ and teachers’  and parents’ rights.
 
We will also have suggestions for ways that Canyon Dems can work to protect public education

Where does our water come from?  Are we going to run out? What is being done to ensure our supply? How safe is it to drink? How are our rates established?  Who controls our supply? 

We have the perfect speaker to address these questions.  Megan Yoo Schneider, Board President of the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC).

Megan is a chemical, civil and environmental engineer with a life-long passion for water and public health.  She also is an adjunct faculty member teaching environmental policy at Chapman University. As a dedicated member and leader of a number of water related environmental organizations, she currently serves as Co-Chair of the Water Environment Federation Board of Trustees on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and is a voting member of the National Science Foundation Drinking Water Advisory Joint Committee.  She has received numerous awards and accolades for her public outreach efforts and water-related research and is devoted to ensuring the future of local, reliable, sustainable and safe water supplies for Orange County.

Megan is the Director of Division 7 of the MWDOC and represents Aliso Viejo, Coto de Caza, Dana Point, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest, Las Flores, Mission Viejo, Rancho Mission
Viejo, RSM, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Trabuco Canyon. 

 

AUGUST COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our community outreach partner this month is the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Here, parents with children in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) can take a few moments to relax, eat and shower. Ronald McDonald Family Rooms help parents find relief and support by talking with others in similar circumstances, while maintaining the comfort of being down the hall from their hospitalized child.

The recent shift to a majority conservative Supreme Court and the overturning of Roe v. Wade has opened our eyes to the impact that courts can have on our daily lives and the lives of our families. The recent exposure of the right-wing influence on the Supreme Court exposed how important it is to have transparency and accountability from the courts.  What other threats are there by the far right to our democracy? How can these threats be exposed and what can be done about them?  Join us to hear Russ Feingold address these issues. 

Russ Feingold is the former US Senator from Wisconsin (1993-2011) famously known for a major piece of bipartisan campaign finance reform known as the McCain-Feingold Act. for which he and Sen. John McCain received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. He is currently President of the American Constitution Society whose mission is to preserve the rule of law and the legitimacy of our democracy, and to ensure that our Constitution and laws protect the lives of all people.  He also recently co-authored “The Constitution in Jeopardy: An Unprecedented Effort to Rewrite Our Fundamental Law and What We Can do About It”.

Ayn Craciun is the Orange County Policy Manager with Climate Action Campaign, a leading nonprofit climate policy watchdog in the region. Ayn’s work focuses on advancing equity, facilitating adoption of zero carbon Climate Action & Adaptation Plans, Building Electrification policies, and Community Choice Energy.

Before embarking on her path as an environmental advocate, Ayn had a successful career in corporate communications and PR. In 2016, Ayn worked as a volunteer to help advocate for the City of Irvine’s historic organic landscaping policy.

In 2018, she turned her focus to the climate crisis and helped build a coalition of support to create the Irvine-led Orange County Power Authority, which launched in December 2020. In Feb. 2021, she joined Climate Action Campaign, helping draft and build support for the City of Irvine’s ACHIEVES climate resolution, which made Irvine the first city in Southern California and the third in the state to commit to 2030 zero carbon goals in line with the most recent climate science.

Ada Briceno will also be speaking at our meeting. Ada is the chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC).  She will be talking about candidate recruitment & training, activities in preparation for the upcoming elections next year and how we can all get involved. Organizing starts now!

Our June community outreach partner is Second Impressions, a local boutique-style resale store that raises funds for the Homeless Ministry of South OC. Sales from costume jewelry sustains bread ovens in Haiti.

We will be collecting clean, very gently used clothing for men and women, purses, jewelry and shoes.

David Edward Burke is the President & Founder of Citizens Take Action because after working in Congress & on numerous political campaigns, he learned that no matter what issue voters care about, big money in politics stands in the way of progress. David founded the organization in 2016 to focus on systemic political changes, including getting bug money out of politics and increasing civic engagement. He wrote the Restore Democracy Amendment because he believes we need a constitutional amendment proposal that offers the right combination of power and viability.

Todd Harmonson is the Senior Editor for the Orange County Register’s and one of the lead editors for the Southern California News Group. He is an award-winning journalist who spent much of his career in sports as a reporter and, later, as the Register’s sports editor. Harmonson has been honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Orange County Press Club for his column writing. Harmonson is the president and chairman of the board of the all-volunteer California Scholastic Press Association, which conducts one of the longest-running high school journalism workshops in the country. He was inducted into Cal State Fullerton’s Communications Wall of Fame in 2017. He and his wife, Michelle, have three adult children.

 

 

 

FEBRUARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our February community outreach partner is I Support the Girls. I Support the Girls (ISTG) collects new/gently used bras and new sealed menstrual hygiene products and distributes them to women and folks experiencing homelessness across the US in order to restore their dignity and self-respect. In the last 5 years, ISTG has distributed over 11.2 million products to over 2,200 social service organizations.

SEPTEMBER COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our September community outreach partner is Second Impressions. Second Impressions is a boutique-style resale thrift store that sells gently-used donated items, which help benefit two ministries: Cross to Light (helps aid in building water wells on Cross to Light church plants in Haiti) and Homeless Ministry of South OC (provides bi-weekly bible studies, delivery of clothing, blankets, toiletries, etc.) 

They are a small boutique style thrift store, with limited storage space so they ask for only Gently Used, Like NEW or brand-new items. You can bring your items for drop off before our meeting. 

Items Accepted:

  • Home Items: furniture, housewares, home décor, framed wall & artwork, lamps, throw pillows, unused candles/holders, new or like new rugs, baskets, new linen & bathroom accessories
  • Kitchen: complete dish/glass sets, pots & pans with lids, silverware, Pyrex, mixing bowls, accessories
  • Clothing: Women, Men, Children
  • Accessories: jewelry, watches, purses, wallets, belts, shoes, backpacks, hats, scarves, sunglasses
  • Other: Antique/Vintage items, records, DVDs, bikes, anything Disney, brand new toys/games still in box

Not Accepted:

Broken, soiled, torn, outdated, stained, faded, over-worn, incomplete items, stuffed animals, books, VHS/DVD, small bric brac, incomplete glass or dish sets, outdated electronics, mattress/beds, golf clubs, cribs, car seats, office supplies, medical equipment, personal pillows, underwear.


Please bring donations to our meeting on Tuesday, September 20th. We will have someone in front of The Murray Center to collect.

General Meeting Feat. Profs Fred Smoller and Michael Moodian: 2022 ELECTION – WHERE ARE WE HEADING?

Dr. Michael A. (Mike) Moodian has served as a faculty member in various capacities for Chapman University since 2007. He teaches graduate and undergraduate students in Chapman’s leadership studies program. Mike released the television documentary Coastal Crisis: California’s Vanishing Beaches, which PBS aired this year in the L.A. region. The documentary—which is currently on the film festival circuit—explores the causes and effects of coastal erosion on California’s beaches. Mike and Fred are co-founders of the inaugural Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. In 2021 the Orange County Register named both in its list of the 125 Most Influential People in Orange County.

 

Masks will be required for all attendees. Everyone attending must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Our August community outreach partner is Mercy House. Mercy House provides housing and comprehensive supportive services for a variety of homeless populations. Their Goal is Simple: To end the cycle of homelessness of those who enter their system of care. Help support their efforts with donations of the following items…

Mercy House is in need of full size bottles of the following hygiene items:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo 
  • Conditioner
  • Bar of soap
  • Razor 
  • Razor blades

The recent redistricting cycle has changed the election landscape in Orange County.  For the first time in the county’s history, there is a Latinx-majority supervisorial district. The upcoming county races are critical for communities that have been historically disenfranchised & marginalized. Our voting rights are at stake with the current make-up of the Supreme Court. ACLU’s Civic Engagement Program seeks to inform voters of the importance of their vote during a non-presidential election year.

Cynthia Valencia is a Senior Policy Advocate and Organizer at the ACLU of Southern California, based in the Orange County office. She has led the ACLU’s Civic Engagement Program in Orange County by organizing volunteers to engage and inform low propensity, highly impacted voters on their voting rights.  For the past year, Cynthia has been working on local redistricting advocacy, ensuring that historically marginalized communities are being accurately represented. Cynthia continues to lead local work on ACLU policy priorities as well as creating activist and leadership development opportunities for our community.

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it ended the constitutional right to abortion that’s been recognized for nearly 50 years. Reproductive health and basic rights are under attack as never before. Join us as we learn from a Planned Parenthood leader about their services and programs, the current political climate and ways we can support their mission. Planned Parenthood is one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality, affordable health care, and the nation’s largest provider of sex education.

Andrea Schmidt serves as the Public Affairs Project Manager at Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC). In her former role as Community Organizer, she built a strong volunteer and advocacy program around legislative and electoral campaigns that centered on sexual and reproductive health care and education.  In her current role as Public Affairs Project Manager, she is involved in compliance and administration.  She continues her focus on legislation, advocacy, and the political work of the organization at a time when abortion rights are severely under assault nationwide.
